coat of arms for our family

von Nathan Meyer
My name is Nathan Meyer, and I am 27 years old and live in Kitchener Ontario

Canada.

I am of German heritage on my father's side of the family and am interested in finding a suitable coat of arms for our family.
I do not have a lot of information on my family except these clues: the city where I live has a large German population from the Mennonites who came

from Pennsylvania in the 19th century.

Here is a bit about my family:

myself:
Nathan Joseph MEYER (b. Kitchener, Ontario 8 June 1977) my father:
Timothy Joseph MEYER (b. St. Clement's, Ontario on 16 March, 1946) his father:
Jerome DIETRICH (b. St. Clement's, Ontario) his mother:
Audrey MEYER (b. 1930 St. Clement's Ontario) his grandfather:
Engelbert MEYER (b.???)
his grandmother:
Reta BEAUPRE (by. 1919)

Other names that share the same bloodline in the area are: BRENNER, DIEBOLD, DIETRICH, FREIBURGER, HAHN, HERGOTT.

We are also of Bavarian heritage like most people in the area and we know that our ancestors came from Germany in the late 19th century.

I do not understand German very well, so if you can please advise in English, if not, I shall translate with BabelFish.

Please, I am looking for any leads, or for any symbols or colours that could

be linked to this family.

Sincerely,
Nathan Meyer

Hi Nathan,

in J. B. Rietstap's "Armorial Générale" alone are recorded over 100 armigerous Meyer families (with different spellings). And apart from that there are hundreds of thousands Meyers living in Germany, the German online phone book cannot even list them all at once!
So I think it is almost impossible to trace your family back with that less information. You need the data of at least one male ancestor of yours who was born in Germany, to start tracing his origin and if there ever has been a coat of arms. However, if you desire to wear a coat of arms, you might apply for a new one. For the procedure of applying see the Governor General's website: gc.ca

In case of applying for a new grant of arms you might refer to the ethymology of that Name. "Meyer" or "Meier" etc. was the title for those who were responsible for the dairy farms connected to noble estates or to the royal/imperial court in the middle ages in Germany. So a proper symbol could be a cow, or a bit more subtle: a scythe. As to colours I would propose silver (Argent) and blue (Azure), the colours of Bavaria.

Yours,
Jochen König

Hallo,
there are 159 coat of arts of (noble and commoner) "Meyer" in Siebmacher and in German Coat of Arms Rule (Deutsche Wappenrolle - DWR).
Therefore it is necesarry to know the family where they come from the place exactly.
Yours sincerely
